8 January 2008 -
Over the last 6 months, discussions have heightened over the future of the XOOPS project. During that time, several things have become evident and recounting them here is not our purpose.
While we were encouraged by the efforts and progress of the Draft Proposal Team and we continued to participate with them in hopes to produce something that would lead to a brighter future for XOOPS, recent events continued to unfold and compound and we have moved to establish a new project - ImpressCMS. ImpressCMS promotes open development, security, stability, extensibility, accessibility, compatibility, user-friendliness, standards compliance, social networking and so many other great things – all the things XOOPS could and should be.
The first releases of ImpressCMS will be based on the XOOPS 2.0.17 core and, as such, will retain compatibility with existing modules and themes. The goal is to provide an on-going, stable environment for information and support for XOOPS and its users. It just will not be the XOOPS of XOOPS.org.
Does this make ImpressCMS a fork of XOOPS? Technically – yes. But, technically, the current XOOPS is also a fork, since it is no longer under the direction of its founder, which was a fork of another project. This is open source, forks happen.
Our Commitment
We will continue to develop and improve a version of this award-winning software project currently released under the GNU General Public License. We wish the XOOPS.org project well and regret that we are not able to work with themImpressCMS will strive to be the best out of the box content management system, with strong emphasis on community tools and moving towards out of the box integration with social networking services such as Facebook, Linkedin, Digg, Delicious, etc...We will welcome everyone and encourage them to participate and contributeWill make all decisions by consensus. And if consensus can not be reached, then a public vote will take placeProvide a seamless migration path from XOOPS 2.0.x and 2.2.x to ImpressCMS
XOOPSinfo, XOOPSaddons, XOOPSdocs and XOOPSwiki were sites built by and for the community and our intention is for them to remain as such. XOOPSinfo, XOOPSaddons, XOOPSdocs and XOOPSwiki will remain open and will continue to be maintained as a resource for XOOPS users and will begin to make the transition to the new project as it develops. The names of the sites may change to reflect the new project, but we will continue with the same directions we started in.
