ImpressCMS 2012: Year Five!

Wow! The reality of our history just sank in - ImpressCMS is about to enter its 5th year! There have been 4 major releases and 12 other final releases during that time, along with all the alpha, beta and release candidates in between. With the release of ImpressCMS 1.3, we have embarked on an entirely different path, one where we have begun to unload all the additional weight of (poorly structured) legacy code.

When Marc_André and I were planning for the 1.3 release, it became clear we didn't want to be burdened by a roadmap. But, we didn't want to just wander around and hope we'd stumble on something significant, either. We set about identifying The Big Things - things important to everyone that could be the foundation of great community sites. 2 things kept coming to the top - Performance (Does it work?) and Usability (Does it work for me?). We also committed to Underdoing the competition and Leveraging the extendibility. Now our challenge is to turn those things into reality.

What's on the radar for 2012?

We've gone into this before, so I'll just hit the highlights:

  • Core, Community, Content
  • Are we there, yet?
  • Performance - (design is a major factor for performance, continuing work from 1.3)
  • Usability - (design, again! Plus, revamped core/system module)
Benchmarks

We need a way to measure our progress and communicate that progress (or lack of it). Here's what you can expect:

  • Quarterly goals
  • Monthly updates
  • Weekly commitments, sessions, reports
How is this all breaking down? Here are the significant milestones for the 2011 - 2012

Q4 2011
  • Maintenance releases (1.2.7 and 1.3.1)
  • Begin process to identify developer maintainers for each branch - 1.2.x, 1.3.x, 2.0
  • New/updated demo site - start
  • Site maintenance: Addons
Q1 2012
  • Anniversary celebration

Q4 2012

We've done a lot to be proud of and it's amazing how quickly the time has passed since we first founded ImpressCMS. To be honest, there's a lot to do, yet. And, just like when we started, we didn't know how we were going to get it all done, but we did. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish in the next year!

Thanks, everyone! Here's to year 5!
